JOHN BOWLBY

John Bowlby is a geologist specializing in Quaternary studies with more than 25 years experience in marine geology and geophysics in the Great Lakes region of North America. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Geological Sciences from Queen's University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. He undertook several years of Ph.D. studies at Queen's prior to joining Ontario Hydro where he was a Senior Engineering Geologist until 1993.

John's specialty is regional and site-specific integrated geological and geophysical studies, with a primary emphasis on identification of geological hazards for major hydraulic, nuclear and transmission line engineering projects. In 1993, he formed Neotectonics Associates which has focussed on geoscientific studies for public safety and urban infrastructure in southern Ontario. He was a participant in the 1994 to 1997 Canadian Great Lakes geology program in which he made 9 mini-submersible dives to observe recent geological characteristics visible on the bottom of Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. He is a Member of the International Association for Great Lakes Research and was a founding member of the former Multi-Agency Group for Neotectonics in Eastern Canada (MAGNEC). He has authored more than 25 published articles and reports and has made numerous presentations in public and professional meetings.

John has been a longstanding advocate of professional recognition and licensure of geoscientists in Ontario. He is currently the Vice President and a member of the Executive Committee of AGO, a founding member of the AGO and was a member of the former CPRGO. He represents Ontario geoscientists as the Alternate Director to CCPG and is also the Ontario Alternate Representative to the Canadian Geoscience Standards Board. John was a member of the AGO-PEO Joint Task Force on Licensure of Geoscientists in 1997. He has compiled the document entitled "Guidelines to Licensure as a Professional Geoscientist in Ontario" based on consultations with the Ontario universities, CCPG and CGSB and many stakeholders.
